U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Columbia Mayor Pro Tem and three-term Third Ward City Councilman, Karl Skala holds experimental psychology degrees from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he retired from cross-disciplinary behavioral and biomedical research as Director of the Swine Hormone Research Core in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine.
He has served on several panels for the National League of Cities and Smart Growth America and is the recipient of Six National League of Cities Leadership Excellence Awards. He is the past Chair of the Columbia/Boone County Environment and Energy Commission and past Vice-chair of the Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission. He is also the past President of the Boone County Muleskinners Democratic Club, the past President of Boone County Smart Growth Coalition and a longstanding member of Columbia Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee. His community service includes Board Membership of New Wave Radio Corp. (KOPN 89.5 FM Columbia) and is the weekly Thursday morning host of KOPN's Morning Ayre Program - Music from the Classical Genre.
